En route to an opening slot on New Found Glory and Yellowcard’s co-headlining tour, Tigers Jaw is on a short run of tour dates with Petal. On October 3rd, a sold-out crowd turned Double Happiness into a sauna filled with crowd surfing and moshing, all in the name of Tigers Jaw.
Petal opened up the show with Kiley Lotz’s haunting vocals and earnest lyrics. Petal began in 2013, and was signed by Run For Cover quickly after the release of their debut EP. With Kiley Lotz as the only official member, the band includes guest performances of musicians from other various bands, including Tigers Jaw. Lotz’s soft vocals create an interesting contrast with the band’s thick guitar tones, which becomes ever more powerful as she unleashes her full vocal strength in songs like “Troubled Heart.” Petal may be new to the scene, but the melodies and stage presence Petal creates seem anything but rookie status. Check out their website here and be sure to pre-order their debut album--Shame—set to release on October 23rd.
Hailing from The Office’s stomping grounds in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Tigers Jaw has been creating their own blend of emo pop-punk for nearly ten years. After a brief hiatus in 2013, Tigers Jaw hit the ground running with the release ofCharmer, in 2014. Now performing as a two-piece with Ben Walsh and Brianna Collins, the band enlists touring members to fill out their sound.
Tigers Jaw made it a point to say that Ohio has always been one of their favorite states to perform in, second only to their home state of Pennsylvania, and it was easy to see why. Before the band even played their first note, the crowd began push moshing—making some crowd members clutch to Double Happiness’ brick walls for support, and making many wonder how the venue could legally hold so many people to begin with. Throughout Tigers Jaw’s set, people were crowd surfing and hanging from the venue’s ventilation pipes like acrobats. The smiles on everyone’s faces were a bit ironic to see as they sang along to sad songs like a group of bitter teenagers, but after seeing both Tigers Jaw and Petal, who wouldn’t be smiling?
