The Columbus Songwriters Association began in 2012 as an idea to help create partnerships and foster creativity between Columbus musicians. CSA puts on Songwriter Showcases each month to help develop and reward Columbus songwriters. The winners of each showcase are then invited to perform at a Finale Showcase, where local artists can connect with music industry professionals.
I attended CSA’s Songwriter Showcase October 4th at one of Columbus’ newest music venues, Notes. It’d be impossible to give each songwriter a review that truly captured their performance, but I chose to spotlight a few of the performers from the night.
Sam Bodary, otherwise known as “Hello Emerson,” performed “Flamenco On The Radio” off of his EP Reliable Temp. With simple, yet heartfelt lyrics, Sam left the crowd speechless, and even received 3rd place at the showcase. Check out Sam’s music here.
John Tucker performed “My Broken Heart.” Although it may have had the typical subject of heartbreak, John Tucker’s performance was much more than “typical”. His vocal delivery seemed similar to that of Sam Smith’s, and with a voice like that, it’s impossible to deny an outpouring of talent.
Victoria Butash’s slow, drifting melodies in “Right By Me” were heart wrenching and memorable. With Victoria’s delicate voice, yet bitter lyrics, the raw emotion of the song captivated the audience. Check out more of Victoria’s music in her project, The Lovelies here.
All in all, my first experience at one of CSA’s many Songwriter Showcases will definitely bring me back for more. Be sure to attend CSA’s Finale Showcase December 6th to see some of Columbus’ greatest.
