During a Friday filled with dreary weather, Double Happiness put on a hardcore show featuring Cruel Hand, Ill Blood, Siege The Gates, Prize The Doubt, and Mad World.
Coming out of Portsmouth, Ohio, Mad World opened up the night with no fear. Although the crowd wasn’t packed, frontman Zach Rolfe and the rest of the band hit the stage with daring charisma, impressing the small crowd in the intimate Double Happiness. With a southern Ohio spin on hardcore, their music was reminiscent of Casey Jones, and created an unrelenting force of old school hardcore. Keep an eye out on their website for upcoming tour dates and new music here.
Officially referred to as “Post Office Core” by the band’s Facebook, Prize The Doubt brought to the show a mix of art rock flavors with a hint of math and progressive metal. With only a guitarist and a drummer, it might look like the band’s sound is lacking, but the duo managed to rip through their set creating trippy and thoughtful, yet still heavy, tunes. Take a listen to their album, New Aesthetic, here.
Columbus, Ohio isn’t really known for its metal scene. Thankfully, Siege The Gates is teaching the locals how it’s done. Growls, down-tuned guitars, and breakdowns can easily sum up a lot of heavy music. Siege The Gates encompasses all of these characteristics, but brings their own spin to the genre, including bass drops, rap verses, groovy guitars, and an attitude that has you moshing in the pit before you realize it. Check out their website for music and tour dates, and be sure to catch their next show, you won’t be disappointed.
Assuming that their name was inspired by No Warning’s album Ill Blood, it’s no surprise that the band has a classic Bridge 9 sound. With heavy breakdowns, driving guitar riffs, and an aggressive stage presence, Ill Blood got the crowd two-stepping like there was no tomorrow. The band announced they’ll be releasing a few new songs on a split EP in the near future, but in the meantime check out their EP Prisoner Of Life here.
Cruel Hand needed no introduction, as the crowd’s immediate hardcore dancing and chanting proved that they’re one of the biggest names in the genre. Their sound draws from classic punk, hardcore, and thrash metal, creating their own blend of East Coast hardcore music. Their songs stay fast and hostile, but their demeanor is upbeat and bouncy, making for a great performance. The band is currently on the road, and will soon be joining The Amity Affliction’s Seems Like Forever U.S. Tour. Be sure to listen to their newest album, The Negatives, and stay updated on all things Cruel Hand here.
