Opener Gavin DeGraw took to the piano, slamming every note while barely sitting still. His energy eventually moved him off the piano bench, clutching a microphone in hand while dancing across the stage. To the surprise of many fans, DeGraw jumped into the crowd during part of his performance, giving many high-fives and bringing smiles to everyone’s faces. Despite being an opener, DeGraw has had his own share of success, including a few platinum singles, a Grammy nomination, and much more. DeGraw’s music might stray from the country genre of Shania Twain, but the audience enjoyed his performance nonetheless.
After Gavin DeGraw’s performance, Shania Twain joined the stage, but not before playing “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll” to set the mood off right. The “rock” in “Rock This Country Tour,” was not simply a marketing ploy, rather a conscience decision by Shania Twain and her team to focus on the rock elements of her music. Every one of her songs seemed tinged with rock and roll, including mad guitar solos, a thumping kickdrum, and pyrotechnics that make you think it’s the fourth of July. Make no mistake, Shania Twain’s performance had every bit of country in it that her fans love, but it also created an unyielding energy of a rock and roll concert that kept fans out of their seats.
The music industry is fickle, and for an artist to go over a decade without releasing a new album is almost unspeakable. However, Shania Twain has still come out on top, bringing out tens of thousands of fans to arenas across the United States. Although “Rock This Country” may be Shania Twain’s farewell tour, do not mistake this tour as her swan song. Shania Twain has said she’s still releasing a fifth studio album, and might even return to Las Vegas residency. In Twain’s own words, “Up, up, up…there’s no way but up from here.”
