Last December, New Found Glory announced their headlining tour, Sleep When I Die. Bringing along up-and-comers of various genres—Turnover, This Wild Life, and Turnstile—the tour was set to bring together fans old and new.

TurnoverTurnover Turnover started the show off right with their old-school emo jams. The band may only have one full-length out (Magnolia), but with four different splits and EPs, the band’s catalog ranges from fast pop punk, to ‘90s alternative rock and grunge. The band shied away from performing most of their older pop punk songs, and instead played more recent songs, including “I Would Hate You If I Could,” and even songs off of their upcoming album, Peripheral Vision. Although their songs were new to most of the audience, the crowd’s head banging showed that they didn’t mind it one bit. Be sure to check out their upcoming album, Peripheral Vision on May 4th.

This Wild Life

This Wild LifeThis Wild Life Acoustic duo, This Wild Life carried on the moody vibes set by Turnover. Playing songs off of their newest album, Clouded, vocalist Kevin Jordan sang songs of breakups and failed relationships. The duo’s set included “History,” “Over It,” as well as a short cover of Blink-182’s “First Date.” This Wild Life is a pair of talented songwriters, who had the crowd, including me, singing along to songs they had never even heard of before the show. Although being an acoustic duo may be a bit strange in a scene where pop punk breakdowns and gang vocals are expected, it does well to set them apart from other generic bands, and compliments Kevin Jordan’s vocals perfectly.

Turnstile

TurnstileTurnstile The show took a stark turn when hardcore band, Turnstile, took the stage. Formerly from Trapped Under Ice—vocalist Brendan Yates immediately jumped across the barrier into the crowd, where he spent most of his time during their set. The group rampantly flew through their setlist, including “Death Grip” and “Blue By You.” It was clear that some of the crowd had never heard of Turnstile, let alone ever attended a hardcore show before. However, those who had heard of Turnstile were die-hard fans, stealing the mic during songs and starting circle pits at every chance. With a stage presence like Turnstile’s, it’s only a matter of time before the slightly confused fans are joining the circle pit.

New Found Glory

New Found GloryNew Found Glory Pop punk giants, New Found Glory pleased eager fans by starting off with “Understatement” before playing hits off of their newest album, Resurrection, including “Selfless” and “Ready and Willing.” Vocalist, Jordan Pundik, injured his foot at a previous performance in Minneapolis, but chose to march on, without cancelling a single date of the tour. This type of relentless mentality is shown in their release of Resurrection, which is undoubtedly one of their best albums, despite the loss of a band member. Their perseverance was rewarded with fans singing along to every song, and wreaking havoc in the mosh pit. In spite of an injured foot, Pundik continued to hop and hobble across the stage. Chad Gilbert (guitarist), Ian Grushka (bassist), and Cyrus Bolooki (drummer) made up for any energy that may have been lost by their frontman’s injury.

New Found GloryNew Found Glory Even after seeing New Found Glory live several times, I can still say their performance at Newport Music Hall was top-notch. These days pop punk bands are a dime a dozen, but New Found Glory’s unshakable fan base proves that after 18 years, they are, and always will be, legends in the genre.
