Concert Review: Meghan Trainor at the Ohio State Fair 8/2/15
At the young age of 21, Meghan Trainor has accomplished more than most can accomplish in an entire lifetime. Her 2014 single, “All About That Bass,” skyrocketed her career and created an anthem for the self-conscious. Her subsequent singles—“Lips Are Movin’” and “Dear Future Husband”—made it clear that she was not a one-hit wonder. Recently, she’s been partnering with other well-known stars, including featuring John Legend on her newest single (“Like I’m Gonna Lose You”) and joining Charlie Puth on his debut single, “Marvin Gaye”. In support of her debut album (Title) Meghan Trainor embarked on her second headlining tour (MTrain Tour) featuring Charlie Puth and Life of Dillon. WXCU had the chance to watch Meghan Trainor stun the crowd at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus, OH.
Life Of Dillon
Life of Dillon is a fairly new group, making their opening slot on the MTrain Tour even more impressive. The band started in 2014 and is a trio from London, United Kingdom. They brand their genre as “acoustic house,” which may sound a bit strange, but still manages to be catchy and memorable. With only one EP released, they’ve already been signed to Epic Records and have begun to build a dedicated fan base in the US. Their single, “Overload,” had the entire crowd moving, as with their cover of Justin Bieber’s “Where Are U Now.” Check out their debut EP, Prologue.
Charlie Puth
Charlie Puth has become a household name thanks to his genius songwriting abilities in creating and featuring on Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” from the latest Fast and Furious film--Furious 7. After appearing in Meghan Trainor’s music video for “Dear Future Husband,” he partnered with Trainor to release his debut single, “Marvin Gaye,” featured on his debut EP--Some Type of Love. The single has already spent eight weeks on Billboard’s “Hot 100,” and Puth made sure to perform the song to the crowd of thousands. Charlie Puth’s singing and piano playing brought a new meaning to “soul,” which is surprising to see in a singer that’s only 23 years old.
Meghan Trainor
Meghan Trainor wasted no time with her performance, immediately starting off with her hit “Dear Future Husband,” which had all of the single ladies (and men) singing along. Trainor took a moment to bring Life of Dillon member and birthday boy, Rob Griffith, onstage. After having the entire crowd sing “Happy Birthday,” and giving him a cake and crown, the two danced together before she moved on to her packed setlist, including “Title” and “Queen.” The performance was not without slower songs, such as “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” and “Close Your Eyes,” the latter of which she spent roaming the crowd and holding hands with various audience members. The crowd’s deafening sing-along eventually caused Trainor to shed a few tears, and endlessly thank the sold-out crowd of over 10,000 people. Without disappointment, the star went back onstage for an encore, performing “All About That Bass.” Throughout most of her performance, Trainor’s choreography was fast-paced and demanding, but her vocals didn’t suffer one bit. Her vocal performance was on par with her recordings, despite the onset of a vocal cord hemorrhage that caused a delay in the tour. A few dates after her performance at the Ohio State Fair, she was unfortunately forced to cancel the remainder of her tour due to requiring surgery for her vocal cord hemorrhage, making her precise vocal delivery all the more surprising.
With the pop industry dominated by airbrushed and surgically manipulated celebrities, Meghan Trainor’s image is a breath of fresh air. Her songs have caught the attention of audiences old and young, and have made it clear that she’s a force to be reckoned with—a “Queen,” if you will. Although her career may have an unexpected detour due to her vocal cord hemorrhage and surgery, her underdog story of success is sure to continue, and quite possibly follow the footsteps of other pop idols, such as Adele or Beyoncé.
