After 18 months of planning, the Fashion Meets Music Festival finally took place in Columbus this past weekend. With a lineup including O.A.R., Switchfoot, Cold War Kids, and more, many were stunned when the event was announced. Not only was the outdoor festival free—but it also took place in Columbus, the state’s capital that many of these headlining acts skip on tour for Cleveland or Cincinnati. Even more stunning, FMMF later announced they’d feature R. Kelly as an after-party artist in their predominantly indie rock lineup. After numerous acts and sponsors withdrew their support, R. Kelly was kicked off the festival with no replacement act. Criticism from media outlets and locals made it questionable whether 100,000+ would attend the event as the festival promoters had predicted.
A few of my favorite performances from the weekend include Twin Forks, Citizen, Circa Survive, Switchfoot, and New Found Glory.
Twin Forks
Twin Forks, Chris Carrabba’s (Dashboard Confessional) newest project, played a great deal of their catchy love songs such as “Kiss Me Darling,” and “Back To You,” along with a cover of “Vindicated” which overjoyed the old school fans in the audience.
Citizen
Hailing from Toledo, Ohio, Citizen had one of the largest crowds seen this past weekend. They took the opportunity to play their newest single, “Silo.” The intermittent rain throughout their set fit the mood perfectly, and by the look of their fans during their time on stage, it didn’t seem they minded it either.
Circa Survive
Circa Survive put on a seemingly intimate performance despite the overwhelming crowd that showed up to their set. Front man Anthony Green’s range shined through as he sang “In The Morning and Amazing…,” “Strange Terrain,” and more.
Switchfoot
Switchfoot fittingly played “Stars” to their star gazing audience, some lying in the lawn while others held up front man Jon Foreman as he climbed across the screaming fans. They played many of their hits, like “Dare You To Move,” “Meant To Live,” as well as covers from Tom Petty, “Won’t Back Down,” and The White Stripes, “Seven Nation Army”.
New Found Glory

New Found Glory closed the last night of the festival with a performance that did not disappoint. They played fan favorites such as “Hit or Miss,” “My Friends Over You,” and “All Downhill From Here,” with a cover of Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” thrown in. Crowd surfing fans gave security a run for their money, with front man Jordan Pundik even jumping into the crowd.
As with all beginnings, FMMF had a few downfalls, such as their confusing ticketing for the after parties and the sparse “fashion” portion of the festival. However, most of the crowd was all smiles throughout the weekend, and festival organizer, Melissa Dickson, has already promised the festival’s return for next year. With careful planning and support, I’m sure FMMF will bring even more of a success to Columbus next year.
